Yes, it's not uncommon for people with RA to experience an itchy scalp. This can be due to the skin being drier than usual. In some cases, if you also have psoriasis, an autoimmune condition that often co-occurs with RA, it could be contributing to the itchiness. Yes my
Scalp is itchy and has dry patches
Since I was a young child, I've always had dry, scaly looking skin...mostly on my hands, legs, arms, behind my ears, scalp and at my hairline on my forehead. During cold weather, my legs, arms, hands, and sides of my face would crack worse and bleed. My family doctor told my mother that I was bathing too often and should limit my baths to once a week and only in lukewarm water.
I was diagnosed with RA when I was 37 and one of the observations my rheumatologist made was that it is common for his RA patients to have psoriasis and very dry skin. He didn't thing much else should be done other than to treat the RA.
I am now 68, I was just diagnosed last year with psoriasis. Most of it seems to be consistently on my scalp, behind my ears, and on my forehead at the hairline. Since most of the treatments for RA are similar or the same as for psoriasis, he recommended we stay the course using the Rx's that are working for me.
Currently, I've been prescribed Orencia(ClickJect) 125 mg. per week, as well as Hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil), Meloxicam. During flares, I have been prescribed short term steroids (ie Medrol dose pack) and pain medications, as appropriate.
To help with itching, I tried the CHI Silk Infusion oil. WalMart, Ulta and Amazon all sell it. I take several teaspoons of it and massage it into my scalp. I wrap my hair in Glad Wrap and a warm towel and let it stay in my hair for an hour or so before washing my hair. Not only does it help with itching, I makes my hair feel silkier.
Hello Cynthia, my name Karen. Your post was very interesting for me. I’ve just been diagnosed with RA. I was having extreme pain with my lower back. It felt as though an animal was knawing on my spine. A woman wrote to me. She is a caretaker for her husband with RA and psoriatic arthritis. She said rarely does RA cause the spine issues that I’m having. I started doing research and I was flabbergasted. I realized I have spots of psoriasis on my knee elbow in the back of my wrist. They’re small areas. I thought about it and realized I have been feeling some itching. Just the bumps, and they burned a bit.. I’m still feeling gobsmacked. I’m new to this site and haven’t figured out how to find her to thank her.
