Does Anyone Take Prednisone Daily? If So, What Mg? Side Effects?

A myRAteam Member asked a question πŸ’

I take Prednisone for five days, about twice a month if I need to. It relieves my depression and anxiety which is as bad, or worse, than my pain. Anyone have any advice?

I take Prednisone as a weaning dose and only as needed to avoid emergency room. I started feeling really apathetic about everything last year and spoke to my family doc about it. I'm usually very positive glass half full type of person. She prescribed wellbutrin for me. It helped alot. Felt more.like.myself within a week. Talk to your family doc maybe. Less side effects from Wellbutrin. It's a vi out cycle. Pain and depression. Depression and pain... Hang in there. πŸ˜‡

I will do anything to avoid Prednisone but like most RA sufferers have had to have it in injection form fairly often - my doctors are very cautious as to how often I can have it. I have taken it orally on the odd occasion in a tapering dose. It certainly worked well but the thought of having it regularly would encourage me to look for other alternatives. My daughter takes something mild for anxiety and depression prescribed by her doctor - I think you should discuss that with your doctor. Pain does make one depressed - maybe the relief you get raises your spirits? Good luck.

I was on Prednisone, along with several other drugs for RA. It took quite awhile to find the right combination of meds to help, but my Doc kept me on a low dose of Prednisone. He said at that low dose it was safe. Well, I felt so much better and trusted what he said and ended up on this drug for many years. Ended up moving to another state and the new Doc couldn't believe I was kept on that. We found out that because of that I now have adrenal insufficiency. Your adrenal glands are what handles stress in your body...so I have lost that ability. I take medicine day and evening for the problem. Also I have to carry emergency meds with me in case any incident would happen...like maybe a car accident...I would have the drug with me and could be given the shot right away. I'm told that waiting may lead to having a stroke or heart attack. I also wear an emergency alert bracelet so anyone would know I have this problem. I have used Prednisone for flares and it worked fine. But staying on it long term is not good.
