Brain Fog And Fatigue Ever Stop?

A myRAteam Member asked a question πŸ’
Leesburg, FL

It has been over 12 years since my RA diagnosis and I just had my first "full body" flare last winter and have never fully recovered. The worst is the brain fog and fatigue that just won't stop. I am going in to see a new rheumatologist (third one) next month. Hoping I can find the right mix of help. 10+ years of Xyljanz and then changed to Humira with methotrexate during the big flare. Any ideas? Does anything sound familiar for a 72 year old male?

Managing persistent brain fog and fatigue with RA can be challenging, but there are strategies that might help. Chronic inflammation, pain, and even medications like corticosteroids can contribute to these symptoms. Here are some suggestions based on my knowledge base:

1. Medication Review: Discuss with your new rheumatologist whether your current medications, like Humira and methotrexate, might be contributing to brain fog or fatigue. Adjustments or alternatives could help.

2. Lifestyle Adjustments: Regular gentle exercise, a nutrient-rich diet, staying hydrated, and prioritizing sleep can improve cognitive function and energy levels. Mindfulness practices like meditation or yoga may also help.

3. Rest and Organization: Scheduling rest periods, writing things down, and setting reminders can help manage brain fog day-to-day.

4. Inflammation Management: Effective control of RA inflammation often reduces fatigue and brain fog. Ensure your treatment plan is targeting inflammation effectively.

5. Mental Health Support: Anxiety and depression, common with RA, can worsen brain fog and fatigue. Consider discussing mental health support with your doctor.

Your persistence in seeking the right care is commendable. Hopefully, your new rheumatologist can tailor a plan to address these symptoms effectively.
