Does Rain Really Increase My Stiffness And Fatigue?

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭
Portland, OR

I thought I read or heard that rain and moisture in the air even if you're inside can make the ra seem a bit more cranky? I seem to get colder faster and my joints seem to want to move less. Am I imagining the effect of the rain??🤔

You're not imagining it! Many people with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) report that their symptoms, including stiffness and fatigue, worsen with certain weather conditions, such as rain and increased humidity. Here are some key points from my knowledge base:

- Patient Reports: Many individuals with arthritis feel that they can predict weather changes based on their joint pain and stiffness.
- Scientific Evidence: While the scientific evidence is not conclusive, some studies suggest a minor connection between weather changes (like drops in barometric pressure and increased humidity) and arthritis symptoms.
- Possible Mechanisms: Researchers suspect that changes in barometric pressure might increase swelling in the joint capsule, leading to more pain and stiffness.
- Mood and Fatigue: Bad weather can also affect mood, which may indirectly influence pain perception and fatigue levels.

If you notice a pattern with your symptoms and weather changes, it's a good idea to discuss this with your doctor to find a treatment plan that works best for you.

Weather can definitely affect RA. I can tell when fronts are heading in our area.

I’ve not noticed an issue with any form of precipitation, just cold in general. My joints hurt and swell more in the colder months. I have to wear compression socks in the winter to prevent my ankles from swelling…it keeps me walking normally.

Yes it is the high barometric pressure that is associated with osteoarthritis. I believe people many of them have both types of arthritis

Absolutely they can affect you a lot. As my RA progressed if the barometric pressure dropped a lot or raised a lot it could put me in bed. Since they doubled my dose it doesn't affect me much. It's crazy it still affects me some because of the nerve damage in my arm.
