Rheumatoid Factor Quant Lab Test

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭
Milwaukee, WI

Hi. 65 yr old/young male. Pretty active biking, swimming, table tennis, more. Been having pain in some joints for about 3 months. Mostly hands/feet. Had a Rheumatoid Factor Quant lab test earlier this week. My Value came back as 350. Anyone want to comment on how bad this is? Maybe like just a little bad, medium bad, super bad, death is imminent?? My lab report says normal is <= 13. Not sure how high the scale goes. Thanks.

The Rheumatoid Factor (RF) test is a blood test that measures the amount of RF antibodies in the blood. Here are some key points:

- Purpose:
- Helps diagnose rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and other autoimmune disorders.
- Assesses the severity of RA and its potential impact on organs.

- Procedure:
- Blood is typically drawn from a vein in the elbow or back of the hand.
- In infants or young children, a lancet may be used to puncture the skin.

- Results:
- A positive RF test indicates higher-than-average amounts of RF antibodies.
- High RF levels can also indicate other autoimmune disorders, certain infections, and some types of cancer.
- Normal RF levels are generally up to 10 IU/mL or 20 IU/mL.

- Limitations:
- An RF test alone cannot diagnose RA or any other condition.
- Other tests and clinical evaluations are necessary for a comprehensive diagnosis.

I am seronegative RA so nothing shows up on my lab work. Mine was through imaging etc. So I can't tell you if it's bad, but I do know that it means that you are positive for RA. How bad it is depends also on what type of damage there is through imaging. You would get more information from your rheumatologist.
