Humira Vs. Enbrel

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭

Has anyone been switched from ENBREL TO HUMIRA? Any side effects I should be worried about from switching? I'm hearing infection horror stories about humira.

Hi J. I didnt have any side effects when I was on Humira, are you having it as a infusion? I never knew just how many side effects it can have, as you said some of the stories😳 having said all that, which RA drug isn’t as bad as RA if you get the side effects. As the rheumy’s over here say, it’s a trade off, risk the side effects for a bit more mobility and less pain😩 I will be rooting for you so hope it works 😀😀🌸🌸

Hi Sarah, they usually want you to try it for 3 months to see if ot works. For me Enbrel worked straight away.

I had to stop Humira because I kept getting sinus infections.

My RA has always been isolated to my feet. I have never been on Enbrel. Before my first Humira shot I was still taking Methotrexate once a week, 10 2.5mg pills, but pain started hitting me after several years on Methotrexate. So I took a prescribed pen shot of Humira one Saturday morning and laid down for a nap. Probably 2 or 3 hours later I wake up and prepare for the pain I will feel from standing or walking on my feet.. huh? My feet do not hurt?! Several hours after my first injection of Humira the RA issue is gone! I was not expecting this. I like Humira.
Side effects started hitting me 6(?) months ago from something. Actually, when my rheumatologist proceeded to decrease the Methotrexate to 8 pills per week the side effects went away very fast. Maybe I will be wheened off of Methotrexate.

I have been on both at different times. I had no side effects, they just didn't work for me. Having said that, we all react so differently to the medications we take for RA, what works for one may not for another. It takes an average of 3 to 4 months to know if it is working for you. You may want to keep a journal of date and the good or bad reactions to medication that you can share with your Rheumatologist.
I hope this helps.
