Can RA Be Anywhere Else Besides The Joints?

A myRAteam Member asked a question šŸ’
Lakeville, MA

I have pain in my thumb joints. But I've had pain in my right forearm between my elbow and wrist. I've had this pain for quite a while now. Could it be RA even if it isn't a joint?

RA effects the whole body. It is associated with joints becausethats the first place you feel pain. The NIH has found that it can cause organ damage and is being associated parkinsons disease which is nerve related. It is also connected to connective tissue disease which I know because I have it. The important thing is to be on a medicine to slow it down asap.
Go luck.

Good morning and welcome to the site @A myRAteam Member! Added you to my page if that's okay! When you think about the anatomy of your arm your muscles attach to bone through tendons. You said your joints were affected so in turn they can affect your muscles causing them to hurt or become weak like tendonitis would. It could be something else like carpal tunnel or in my case I have fibromyalgia which effects the muscles more than the joints. Your doctor should be an expert at figuring this out. I would suspect if your muscles are affected you may need Physical Therapy to regain strength in them. I've had this happen to myself. Often for me just getting the RA under control helps the problem. RA can affect anywhere it's true because it's a systemic sutoimmune disease. I hope this is helpful but remember to ask your doctor. Have a blessed day!

@A myRAteam Member I'm on Hydroxychloroquine and I have had only a loss of appetite for a little while. Now there are not side effects. I've been on it for a while, so I think it's time to either up the dose or give me something else. I am seeing a new rheumatologist in a few weeks. Hopefully he will take me seriously. My last one shrugged me off when I said I had pain in both thumbs now. I will end up going into Boston if I need to. That's where the best doctors are. But it is an hour ride, so I will try this new one first. Let me know how you make out. I'm adding you to my team.

It could be fibromyalgia. I was diagnosed with that before they finally diagnosed my RA.
