Can I Ask A Silly Question? I'm In One Of The Worst Flares I've Been In For Years. I'm Kinda Used To My Ankles Swelling To Look Like Hams

But this flare has given me swollen gums, jaw pain and unable to sleep. Is jaw or tooth area pain normal in a bad flare? I'm so used to my knees ankles and hands swelling that its become norm in a flare but this tooth pain is making it hard to sleep or eat. My PCP thinks its RA flare but I'm curious what you all think? I can't sleep or eat and all of this has me in tears . I haven't had the RA hit me this hard in awhile. Before I rush off to the dentist do y'all think its part of the flare and… read more

Jaw and tooth pain can indeed be part of a rheumatoid arthritis (RA) flare, especially if the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is affected. RA inflammation can cause pain, swelling, and stiffness in the jaw, making it hard to eat or sleep. Swollen gums could also be linked to RA-related oral health issues, such as gum disease or Sjögren’s syndrome, which can cause dry mouth and increase the risk of infections.

To ease the pain, you might try over-the-counter NSAIDs like ibuprofen to reduce inflammation, but consult your doctor first. A dentist visit is still a good idea to rule out infections or other dental issues. If the pain persists, your rheumatologist might recommend a bite guard, physical therapy, or even corticosteroid injections for TMJ inflammation. Stay hydrated, and consider using a fluoride rinse or alcohol-free mouthwash to soothe your gums.

It often takes the input of both a dentist and a rheumatologist to diagnose TMJ. When I have a TMJ flare, it pretty much takes over my life until it calms down.
First step is rest your jaw. Just chewing, smiling or talking can make the pain worse. I have a chin gel pack that can be frozen or microwaved for either cold or heat. Velcro over the head holds it in place. Looks ridiculous, but it's helpful. Found it on Amazon.
Good luck on this jaw pain. Do get a doctor or dentist onto this.

Carol 2015, I’m sure the flare is from the surgery! I’m miserable but my God has this and is still in control…pain seems to be letting up somewhat, but trusting God for complete healing!
Hope you are persevering in your health issues! I’m praying for you! ❤️🙏❤️
