Do Others Find That Flares Get Worse As The RA Progresses?

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭

I was diagnosed 2 years ago and have been doing pretty well the last 6 months. My flares have been minimal and easy to control. As of a week ago, I'm guessing the stress of the holidays, My hands have swollen worse than ever before and the fatigue is horrible. My Rheumy just sent in an order for Medrol. He says it a bit stronger than regular prednisone. Anyone else find this happens to you?

Yes, flares can worsen as RA progresses, especially if the disease isn't well-controlled. Stress, like during the holidays, can trigger more severe flares. Increased swelling, fatigue, and prolonged stiffness are signs that RA may be worsening. Medrol (methylprednisolone) is indeed stronger than prednisone and can help reduce inflammation quickly. It's important to monitor symptoms and discuss any changes with your rheumatologist to adjust treatment as needed.

when I was just on Plaquenil itself there were days of flare activity becoming difficult to manage without having compression socks and/or compression gloves at the time. Less pain did happen two to three weeks after the Methotrexate injection began. I noticed this positive change as the compression gloves were no longer needed to be used as frequently as they were prior to just starting the medication.

Every person is different when taking medication. In this case, I chose to take Methotrexate injection rather than the pill form for personal reasons. I highly suggest to speak with your specialist or even ask questions to local pharmacist as they should be able to provide further detail with side effect activity.

For me I think my flares get worse or more frequent with the weather changes and as I've gotten older and lived with ra longer..I hope if you have one it goes easy on you😊

Strangely the steroid pills do nothing for me except for helping a case of poison ivy rash. I get a big dose of steroids by iv and immediately bounce back. Doesn't last but a few weeks sometimes. For me.

Not sure if the RA is getting meaner or my age is making me less tolerable. The fatigue sure sucks the getupandgo right out.

Esther, my RA was doing pretty good since they upped my dose. The holidays put me in a little tailspin. Knock on wood I haven't had a bad flare since the new dose. They gave me medrol for 3 months it was so bad. Stress is really bad for this disease. I hope the medrol helps. 🙏❤️
