Has anyone had any issues or connections with their rheumatoid arthritis and stomach problems?

I was had my gallbladder removed 20 years ago, diagnosed with IBS 12 years ago, and RA 2 years ago. Lately all of my GI symptoms have come back horribly. Stomach pain in the upper left and right abdomen, cramping and pain in the lower abdomen, nausea and vomiting, diarreah, lack of appetite, bloating and gas. Has anyone experienced anything similar?

I was diagnosed with mixed connective tissue disease by my GI. Had a history of severe reflux for years and now hypo motility of the esophagus. Had esophageal dilation to stretch it, but that really didn't help. also take. I am also on Dexilant and another one of those medication's at night time. The doctor also recommended Gaviscon liquid to help with the heartburn. I have lost about 10 pounds, now weighing 109 pounds which is less than I weighed when I was in high school. Frequent meals are easier and my appetite is definitely different because certain foods don't feel comfortable digesting. I hope you find what helps you!

Thank you both. I have had DVT and bilateral pulmanary embolism twice in the last year, second time I was hospitalized. I am currently on Sulfasalazine, prednisone. Arava. For my stomach I am on dexilant, pepcid, and colestipol. Still trying to figure this all out. RA diagnosed after having Covid and getting vaccinated.

My primary care doctor is young and has been there right with me since I was diagnosed with Graves Disease 2 years ago. She also thinks it strange I haven’t had bloodwork work ordered in about 5 years now. She ordered it a year ago, and I had some inflammation. But rheumatologist didn’t think it was enough to warrant any prednisone or looking into maybe Humira isn’t working so well anymore.
I’m on 40 every other week of Humira
Levothyroxine because my thyroid was removed, nortyptiline for fibromyalgia, fluoxetine, gabapentin for spinal stenosis and nerves down legs, heart medications, and a variety of vitamins and one pain medication. I’m a walking medical menace. I started having cardiac issues after 5 doses/boosters of Covid vaccines and had light case of Covid itself. I went through many, many tests in the past year, and they can’t find much wrong. Maybe the ongoing inflammation is a cause of my pain and discomfort and fatigue.

Can I ask what medications or changes helped? Also were your doctors cooperative? All of mine want to keep things separate as if nothing is connected.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is primarily known for its impact on joints, but it can also significantly affect the gastrointestinal (GI) system. Here are some key points regarding the connection between RA and GI symptoms:

1. Increased Risk of GI Problems: Individuals with RA may experience a variety of GI issues due to the inflammatory nature of the disease.

2. Common GI Symptoms: These can include abdominal pain, bloating, and diarrhea. Conditions like gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and ulcers are also more prevalent among those with RA.

3. Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO): This condition can develop in RA patients, leading to symptoms such as bloating, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.

4. Medication Side Effects: Treatments for RA, such as disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), can cause GI side effects like abdominal pain, bloating, and constipation.

5. Collaborative Care: Managing these symptoms often requires coordinated care between a gastroenterologist and a rheumatologist to address both the joint and GI aspects of RA.

It's important for patients with RA to discuss any GI symptoms with their healthcare provider to manage these effectively alongside their RA treatment.
