Greater trochanteric bursitis and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) can be interconnected. In RA, inflammation is a key feature, and this inflammation can extend beyond the joints themselves. Bursitis, including greater trochanteric bursitis, involves inflammation of the bursae, which are small, fluid-filled sacs that cushion the bones, tendons, and muscles near joints. RA slightly raises the risk of having bursitis due to the overall increased inflammation in the body. This means that individuals with RA might experience greater trochanteric bursitis as part of their condition. This type of bursitis can cause pain in the lateral side of the hip and thighs, particularly with movement or when pressure is applied, such as sleeping on the affected side.
