I also think chronic illness can cause depression. For instance, RA has quite a bit of pain at times.

Yes, totally agree, sickness and pain, chronic or not can be precursors for depression! There are times you just withdraw and can't function. People who have never been seriously or frequently ill and or in pain just don't understand why one could be depressed.
