Tailbone Pain?

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭
Ellicott City, MD

Ok, I am embarrassed to ask this question. But here goes -- I have pain for the last few months on my tailbone. If I sit for a long period of time without shifting around, I get this pain like I've injured myself in the tailbone. When I stand up, I am very stiff for a while. It doesn't hurt all the time. But it is annoying. To help myself, I use a "donut" pillow during my 2-3 hours of commuting time (the pillow helps a lot). Is this an RA thing? Cause that is what I really NEED....more… read more

I really feel for you!! I have ghout, and had x Ray's done for severe back pain. The doctor found hairline fractures in my tailbone and a few fractures in my vertebrae. There is nothing g they can do for the tailbone they say, I cant use a donut or pillows, the pressure alone makes me climb a wall with pain!!! I'm going to a new rheumatologist on the 14th , I've had bloodwork done to check for sjogrens syndrome, and any other forms of nerve issues. Spasms and severe cramping in my upper back and shoulders makes my eyes water quite frequently. Not on any kind of pain meds yet! And dont want opiates, I'm going to try medical marijuana edibles and oil capsules with a high cbd balance!!

Well, things could be worse and sometimes are. With the "donut" you said it helped. Maybe you could use the donut and try to remember to stand up for a while if you can and relive the pressure and together it will be a little better. I do understand, i have one in the same area as you and sometimes I do feel as if it is the size of a golf ball! Maybe you could use a small amount of aspercreme onbit to relieve the swelling and inflammation, also. Just be careful and don't use too much because of the location. That's what i have done and it helps me.

Probably a bony knot from the RA thst is tender and sensitive and making u so uncomfortable. I have one right at the very bottom of my tailbone or at the top of the crack of my butt and it feels as if I am sitting or laying on a golfball. SO UNCOMFORTABLE AND PAINFUL!!!

I work for orthopaedic drs... I suggest you go for a consult as it this coccyx pain (tailbone) may be unrelated to RA. I had that a few years ago - long before RA... it gradually went away but I felt better knowing it wasn't anything serious. The doctor can take an xray - just to make sure you don't have a fracture. It can be an inflammation, perhaps you injured it unknowingly ?
