A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭

Hi... I'm getting very upset. I started Methatrexate almost 3 months ago and read it helps eliminate nodules. Well, lo and behold my fingers are swollen past few days and a new ugly Nodule is popping up on the side of ny already swollen middle finger. Ironic, because that is the finger I want to give to RA. Anybody have experience as to WHO GETS THESE ugly things and do they ever go away ? Someone told me Apple Cider vinegar wraps - tried that - didn't do a thing except stink up my house… read more

Lindy it’s always good to educate yourself but my father was a doctor and your response back about methotrexate is wrong. Methotrexate is: 👇

Methotrexate (MTX), formerly known as amethopterin, is a chemotherapy agent and immune-system suppressant.[4] It is used to treat cancer, autoimmune diseases, and ectopic pregnancies.[4] Types of cancers it is used for include breast cancer, leukemia, lung cancer, lymphoma, gestational trophoblastic disease, and osteosarcoma.[4] Types of autoimmune diseases it is used for include psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, and Crohn's disease.[4] It can be given by mouth or by injection.

Common side effects include nausea, feeling tired, fever, increased risk of infection, low white blood cell counts, and breakdown of the skin inside the mouth.[4] Other side effects may include liver disease, lung disease, lymphoma, and severe skin rashes.[4] People on long-term treatment should be regularly checked for side effects.[4] It is not safe during breastfeeding.[4] In those with kidney problems, lower doses may be needed.[4] It acts by blocking the body's use of folic acid.[4]

Methotrexate was first made in 1947 and initially was used to treat cancer, as it was less toxic than the then-current treatments.[7] In 1956 it provided the first cures of a metastatic cancer.[8] It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.[9][10] Methotrexate is available as a generic medication.[4] In 2020, it was the 113th most commonly prescribed medication in the United States, with more than 5 million prescriptions.

I cut up my shoes to make it comfortable, top and side. Ugly deformed feet but thankful I can walk. Hands ugly with nodules, painful doing cooking but manage. Keep smiling, could be worse things.😃

I've read that there are different types of nodules...

Mine are hard and attached to the bone or grow from the bone. Some ppl say theirs can be drained or will go away on their own. That sounds like RA nodule. But my nodules are Osteo- nodules.

My specialist said nothing can be done for mine, they can't be removed and some will be painful at times, turn red and have swelling. This hard bone type cannot be removed nor will they go away. Whatever. If you bang one it sure hurts. Especially on the underside of your finger.

There are arthritis rings that curl around your fingers and joints to help support your joints and protect them. You can still use your hands normally. I got some on Etsy, but the wait for them was weeks. Ebay sellers have some too. And compression gloves help.

I have had arthritis in my heads for a long time w/o the diagnosis of RA. Now the nodules are worse and my right hand has more modules and it hurts most of the time. I exercise my hands just to make sure they open and close.
There are a lot of people that don't know what RA is and that I should be able to commit to helping, but I don't know my good days to plan. I feel like I am never going to be able to do what I used to. I feel like I am always feeling sorry for myself, but one thing I try not to give up. God has helped me through a lot of things and I know he will help me through this. God bless you all and I understand the nodules and people not understanding.
😌

Hey - nodules on both of my hands showed up first in my RA journey. Nodules do stay but if yours are more swollen & hurting more than usual, perhaps you are having a “flare”.
Call your dr if need be. Hope you feel better!
