My Knees Are Always Feeling Swollen, But Don't Show It On The Outside. My Rheumatologist Says I Have No Swelling It's Very Frustrating

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭
Newmarket, ON

When I was first diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis I had severe swelling that showed on the outside both of my knees and my ankles yes. Now the swelling has gone down, and when I go to my rheumatologist and they do the tests of seeing if there's any swelling they always seem to say no. But I feel the tightness inside and they feel swollen cuz I cannot bend them. Has anybody felt the same thing I'm feeling and how's your doctor told you there's no swelling but you feel it?

Yes. I understand what you are feeling. Your knees feel stiff, tight , painful and hard to bend. It may be tendinitis of the knee. Sometimes I use a heating pad or a heated sock with rice and place them on my knees. It seems to help. (My physical therapist taught me about the sock n rice)

Yes, it does sound like tendinitis and it hurts !! I too use heat and support the area. My Dr. will inject whatever areas are affected. I have had trigger finger(thumb) shoulder tendinitis and knee injections that take the pain away. Hope you feel better and don't ever question what you feel that does not show outwardly. Unfortunately, it is there......tightness and inflammation.

It can be very frustrating when your symptoms aren't visibly acknowledged. Here are some points to consider:

- Imaging Tests: Request imaging tests like MRI or bone scans, which can reveal internal inflammation not visible externally
- Detailed Symptom Description: Keep a detailed log of your symptoms, including pain, Show Full Answer

- Family History: Mention any family history of RA, as it can be a significant factor in diagnosis.

I feel swelling in my fingers but doctor can’t see it. They feel tight at times hard to bend. Swelling is there but it’s not visual ...
