Naproxen?!

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭

Hi all, just wanting a bit of advice as I'm still waiting for a rheumy app :(

So around 4/5 weeks ago I finally ended my methotrexate treatment (by choice) as I couldn't take the side effects any longer, anyway I was already taking vitamins Alongside it so I carried on with the vitamins and also take 1 500mg naproxen too!? Is this safe to take daily?! I was told to take 2 previously in a flare but I've decided to take the one a day myself (as I'm a little scared of being totally med free) I'm… read more

I too couldn't tolerate MTX - evil drug! Made me so unwell it wasn't worth it - I've been on Sulphasalazine for a number of years and I find it really good. But like everything, you will have to try things out and find the one that's right for you.

Be careful with the anti-inflammatories as they can lead to a whole heap of other issues you don't want to be dealing with, especially in your stomach (ulcers, IBS, inflammed bowel etc). During bad flare ups, my doctor puts me on a course of steroids which helps and I only take anti-inflammatories if I really need it, as you can also be at risk of becoming immune to their effects if you take them constantly for too long.

Eating alkaline foods and avoiding acidic foods actually has a great impact on inflammation - when we eat too many acidic foods, our system becomes overloaded with acidity and that acidity builds up in the joints, so reducing the acidic foods helps keep our bodies more alkaline, which is ideal. I have found that to be really true with my symptoms - I have a great chart with common acidic and alkaline foods if you're interested.

Another natural way to assist with inflammation is soaking feet and hands in epsom salts with hot water. Hope that helps :)

Mtx can stay in your system for about 6 weeks. I'd say try to get an appt with rheumy as quick as you can bc the mtx may still be helping with RA even though you feel the awful side effects of the med. when it does wear off you may be hurting worse. You can take the naproxen daily but I agree with the others, too much for too long can cause stomach issues. I hope your rheumy finds you an appt asap!

I'll dig it out @A myRAteam Member and see if I can add it for you. Really hope the salts help, it's the magnesium that assists with inflammation :)
