Do I Stop Humira Now That My CT Scan Identified A Fatty Liver & Lung Module??

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭
Clarksville, MD

Was diagnosed with RA (seronegative) 2 years ago. First flare lasted 8 1/2 months. Was on 6 sulfasalazine (500 mcg) & humira every 2 weeks. In May a CT revealed a fatty liver & a nodule in my lung - none were present 3 years ago. I took myself off Sulfasalazine & am now considering stopping Humira. I have no joint damage from RA, but have osteoarthritis in knees & hands. My RA tells me the bloodwork & scans are “fine.” I am not a drinker but have a horrendous sweet tooth, 75, able to walk 1 mile… read more

I take no meds and recently found out I have a fatty liver . So I believe either way it's possible with this disease. Don't assume it's the medicine.

It's important to consult your healthcare provider before making any changes to your medication regimen. Here are some key points from my knowledge base that might be relevant:

- Fatty Liver in RA Patients: Research indicates that RA patients have a higher prevalence of fatty liver compared to those without RA. This condition is associated with higher levels of inflammation and the presence of rheumatoid factor.
- Humira (Adalimumab): Humira is a TNF blocker used to reduce inflammation in RA. Some patients report pain upon injection, but a citrate-free version is available that may reduce this discomfort.
- Medication Impact: Common RA medications, including methotrexate, can affect liver function, but no specific differences in fatty liver were found based on medication type in RA patients.

Given your situation, it's crucial to discuss your concerns and the findings of your CT scan with your rheumatologist. They can provide personalized advice and may suggest alternative treatments or additional tests to monitor your liver and lung health.

Terrmar NASH is not caused by RA and not all RA treatments affect the liver. If left untreated RA can do great damage to your organs as well as joints synovial fluid damage. Are you working with a rheumatologist?
