Can Sjögren’s Syndrome Cause Nodules In The Lungs And Adrenal Glands? Or Would The Nodules Be Caused By Rheumatoid Arthritis?

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭
St. Catharines, ON

I had a CT scan done on August 7 where a 5mm nodule was found in the right lobe lung and 1.8 x 1.2 cm nodule in my adrenal gland. I am trying to see if there is anything else I should add to my list to discuss with my rheumatologist at my next appointment on December 20. To help finally receive a diagnosis, I have symptoms of joint pain, fatigue, insomnia, low grade fevers, red dry eyes, dry itchy skin, dry mouth. I have already been diagnosed with GERD, IBS-M, Osteoarthritis and Benign… read more

Because of my RA and Sjogrens my pulmonologist keeps a pretty close watch on my lungs. I had a very small one the last time I had my lung MRI. I haven't had nodules in my adrenal glands but my adrenal glands quit working well. My rheumatologist had ran a cosentropen test. He explained it to me that my body is fighting itself so much that the adrenals get tired and lazy. So I had to go in medication for 3 months. I also have CVID which is an immune deficiency disorder. So it's double fighting.

Based on my knowledge base, rheumatoid arthritis (RA) can cause nodules in the lungs. These nodules can range in size and may come and go over time. In some cases, a nodule can rupture and cause a collapsed lung.

For your upcoming appointment on December 20, here are some points you might consider discussing with your Show Full Answer

For your upcoming appointment on December 20, here are some points you might consider discussing with your rheumatologist:

- Lung and Adrenal Gland Nodules: Mention the findings from your CT scan, including the 5mm nodule in the right lung lobe and the 1.8 x 1.2 cm nodule in the adrenal gland.
- Symptoms: Joint pain, fatigue, insomnia, low-grade fevers, red dry eyes, dry itchy skin, and dry mouth.
- Existing Diagnoses: GERD, IBS-M, Osteoarthritis, and Benign Hypermobility Syndrome.
- Potential Overlap with Sjögren’s Syndrome: Given your symptoms of dry eyes and dry mouth, discuss the possibility of Sjögren’s syndrome, which can overlap with RA.

This comprehensive list should help guide your discussion and ensure all relevant symptoms and findings are considered.
