I'm Told Medicare Doesn't Cover Enbrel. Has Anyone Been Able To Get It Covered Or At Least At A Reduced Cost? Thank You!

I was diagnosed with seronegative RA in July 2024. I started on Plaquenil right away. Unfortunately, it hasn't improved RA symptoms, but it is causing significant gut issues. This is why my Rheumatologist started me on Enbrel yesterday. After one 50mg dose, all RA symptoms dramatically improved within a few hours. However, I was devastated to find out that Medicare won't cover this medication. At nearly $6000 a month, it won't be an option for me unless I can find a way to get it covered.

Angie, I see you are on a Medicare Advantage Plan. When I was on Medicare Advantage my copay for the infusion was $489 per infusion. Rituxan is given in 2 infusions, 2 weeks apart every 6 months. Some infusions are given every 6 months, some monthly. It all depends on the medication you are prescribed. I changed my Medicare Advantage Plan to Original Medicare with a Supplemental plan and a Part D plan for prescriptions. It seems we are in a dilemma with medical coverage.

I was on infusion Rituxan. The others I listed can be administered via infusion as well. They should all be covered.

Thank you so much! This is exactly what I was looking for. Yes, we are disqualified from the patient assistance programs because of Medicare. I'm only 58, but receive Medical as part of my disability benefits. I read your bio and it looks like you've had improvement with Rituxan. Is that drug the one that Medicare pays for?

Hi. Iā€™m sorry to hear about Enbrel cost.
I would recommend that you call Medicare and discuss coverage. I would not take no for an answer . Enquire if your rheumatologist can document that medication is necessary, as that can help with Medicare. Also let your rheumatologist know that you cannot afford it and ask him if there are affordable alternatives . Also ask Medicare if there is a medication from the same group ( TNF blocker ) that they might be covering.
