I'm Quite Curious About Methotrexate Causing Trouble With Kidneys

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭
Council Bluffs, IA

Last visit I had with rheumatoid specialist went very well without any difficulty. The one issue that did come about was a question that came about after blood work took place. The specialist actually called me direct and said he would like me to visit PC about this odd number that appeared for the kidney test that took place. When I asked him the question, would there be a need to lower the medication his response was not at this time because of the number showing but there is enough concern… read more

Methotrexate can indeed cause issues with the kidneys, particularly if there is pre-existing kidney disease. Here are some key points from the knowledge base:

- Kidney Disease: If you have or have ever had kidney disease, methotrexate can accumulate to toxic levels in your body, leading to serious side effects.
- Monitoring: Your doctor will monitor you more carefully if you have kidney disease and may adjust your dosage or stop treatment if necessary.
- Risks: Unrecognized kidney disease can lead to methotrexate toxicity, which can suppress bone marrow and cause other severe side effects.

Always inform your doctor about any kidney issues before starting methotrexate.

I think that you need to see a KIDNEY specialist be it a Urologist or hypertensive doctor. My friend is 93 ( has untreated RA) and we are working w/ doctors since her ankles and feet SWELL big time. From my VAST experience Primary Care Physicians (PCPs) know a little bit about everything and NOT a whole heck of a lot about ANYTHING!

I have been on methotrexate 15mg (self injecting once a week) for three years and have had no problems so far touch wood. I also have quarterly blood tests which serve to monitor liver and kidney function.

SuElf, all I can tell you is to find out sooner rather than later what's causing the kidney levels. I've quit taking methotrexate because it effected my immune system. I have quit a couple of biologics because it effected my bradycardia. I quit an immunoglobulin because it skyrocketed my liver levels. Be your own advocate. I still respect my doctors, my PCP, rheumatologist, immunologist and my pain doc. They can't help that my body doesn't work like normal people.
Good luck, I hope you find it's not a big deal, but do your research about it.
