Based on the context provided, there isn't a direct comparison in the effectiveness between hydroxychloroquine and leflunomide when used in combination with methotrexate for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Each combination has its own benefits and potential side effects:
1. **Hydroxychloroquine and Methotrexate**: This combination is often used in what is known as triple therapy, which includes sulfasalazine. It's a common choice for many patients who can't afford or tolerate biologic medications. Hydroxychloroquine is known for its role in decreasing the activity of the immune system, which can be beneficial in treating rheumatoid arthritis.
2. **Leflunomide and Methotrexate**: Studies have shown that the combination of leflunomide (Arava) and methotrexate is safe and efficacious for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. This combination can provide improved clinical benefits for patients who continue to have active disease despite maximal doses of methotrexate alone.
The choice between these combinations can depend on individual patient factors, including other health conditions, tolerance to medications, and specific treatment goals. It's important to discuss these options with a healthcare provider to determine the most appropriate treatment strategy.

My hubby's sister was on ONLY MTX then had to add Orencia. Everyone's DNA is different. Sorry, that is all I know. Hubby was on Cimzia and began to reject it. NOW, only on MTX. Blood work next week. We will see how it goes.

I've been on both and it didn't work. So now I'm on Orencia.
