How To Treat BOTH R/A And Chrons?

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭
Redmond, OR 97756

I have both R/A & Crohns. I'm on Symponi & Methotrexate for the R/A, because I'm allergic to so many of the R/A drugs. I cannot take another biologic for my Chrons. We're trying Trulance and Budesonide to control symptoms of the Chrons. How do I handle the flare ups of both and what foods are best for both (NOT veggies like broccoli, cauliflower, brussell sprouts, carrots and celery etc). And because of the Chrons, I can't take any NSAIDS. Tylenol is worthless.

I had had GI issues for almost 20 years, was told it was IBS. RA for 2 years now. This past month I have been having crazy stomach issues. I'm starting to think it may e Crohns or Ulcerative colitis. I feel your pain.

I have RA and Crohn's as well. I have been on Remicade infusions @ 4 weeks and weekly MTX injections (sub Q) since 2016. They both work on Crohn's as well as RA. Both my RA and GI docs plus my Pulmonologist and Oncologist and have looked for a better combination solution and found none. These medications and disease affect a lot and have side effects. . Both diseases are reasonably well controlled.

I have NHL as well but it is inactive. If I have a NHL flare, Rituxan infusion is the remedy and it will control RA but not Crohn's. So I face a dilemma if the NHL flares. I have access to a NHL specialist at Moffitt Cancer Center if needed.

I developed some antibodies to the Remicade in 2021 and they tried me on Rituxan once and it was a bad reaction. Created lung issues and I ended up in the hospital for a week so Rituxan is out.

For short term or emergency flares, I keep Prednisone tablets on hand. A short taper of 40mg-30mg-20mg-10mg each day for 4 days usually gets me relief short term. If the flare continues I stay on the 10mg per day for a few more days.

Discuss this with your doctors! They can give you specific dosages. Long term continuous use of prednisone is problematic.
