Methotrexate I May Have To Stop

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭
Sussex, NJ

I am having a lot of infections like every month my rheumatologist is recommending that I stop methotrexate. I can’t take biologic because if I do it could kill me. Has anyone taken anything else? He also said there is nothing else I can take. I don’t want to take pain meds for the rest of my life. My RA and Sjögren also had been extremely advancing. What do I do? I am reaching out for some help or answers or if anyone else has experienced this and what do I do next?

I am NOT a physician and my husband is the RA patient. I THINK you are looking for a DMARD (NON-biologic). I am a VERY confused since hubby WAS on Cimzia and it IS a biologic. Here is the list. RESEARCH EVERYone on the list through Google. Feel better. MAYBE, you need a NEW RA doctor. If you are seeing a Primary Care Physician, that, to me, is NOT good enough. Let us know how you make out!.DMARDs include methotrexate, sulfasalazine, leflunomide (Arava®), etanercept (Enbrel®), infliximab (Remicade®), adalimumab (Humira®), certolizumab pegol (Cimzia®), golimumab (Simponi®), abatacept (Orencia®), rituximab (Rituxan®), tocilizumab (Actemra®), anakinra (Kineret®), antimalarials (e.g. Plaquenil®). I USUALLY TRUST Webmd.com. Here is the link.https://www.webmd.com/rheumatoid-arthritis/vide...

Hi Barbara, I think I’d be getting a second opinion from a different doctor right away.

Have you been on hydroxycloriquine? When I couldn't continue methotrexate the put me on hydroxycloriquine. It helped slow down the progression of RA since 2016. But then just over a year ago my RA got worse and I was diagnosed with Sjogrens. I have been off the hydroxycloriquine for just over a month. I may have to go back on it because the biologic I'm on isn't working. I would suggest going to a immunologist for your infections. I had constant infections after methotrexate. I have an immune deficiency disorder. May have been caused by the methotrexate or its something I've always had. They just had me get a pneumonia shot. I don't remember which one it was. But instead of raising my immune system it actually lowered it. That's how they knew. One of my IG (immunoglobulin) levels at the time was only 300.. the normal range is (Phone number can only be seen by the question and answer creators). I will have IVIG infusions the rest of my life. I've tried to go without them but I get sick again. I hope they can find a RA med soon. But definitely have some doc check your IG levels. They don't all do that.

What are you talking about? There are over 200 types of treatments. There are Janus Kinase Inhibitors Xeljanz and Rinvoq. or Tumor Necrosis Factor Inhibitors— etanercept (Enbrel®, adalimumab (Humira ®), and infliximab (Remicade®)
T-cell Costimulatory Blocking Agents—abatacept (Orencia®)
B cell Depleting Agents—rituximab (Rituxan®)
Interleukin-1 (IL-1) Receptor Antagonist Therapy—anakinra (Kineret®)
Other Immunomodulatory and Cytotoxic agents— azathioprine (Imuran®), cyclophosphamide, and cyclosporine A(Neoral®, SandimmunRA meds. Why hasn’t your rheumatologist told you about those treatments. Why would Biologics kill you?

Are you considering stopping methotrexate treatment? If so, it's important to discuss this decision with your rheumatologist first. Stopping methotrexate suddenly can lead to RA flare-ups, which are periods when symptoms like joint stiffness, pain, and swelling worsen. Some guidelines recommend tapering off methotrexate slowly if your RA is well controlled to prevent flare-ups. Always consult your doctor before making any changes to your medication regimen.
