Methotrexate And Hair Loss

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭

Hi,
I'm been on methotrexate since 30 November 23, and am losing heaps of hair, too the point that it has thinned considerably on the top of my scalp.
Has anyone who have had the same problem found something that helps (short of stop taking methotrexate)?
Thanks

Have taken folic acid from the start, but still lost loads of hair (nearly a 3"dia pony went down to <1") Doc had me do leucovorin calcium for a bit, which stopped the loss cycle for a while, tho it does return periodically. Didn't see return growth until I started some Hair growth gummies I found online. There is a lot of conversation out there about these supplements being less than effective, but they have worked well for me, my mother and my bestie, so 🤷‍♀️ I have something like 4" of recognizable new growth in all areas of my head. Full disclosure, I switched to Rasuvo (injectable methotrexate) instead of oral at about the same time I started the gummies.

Good luck & don't give up, you will find a solution 🫂

Good morning Monica, I started taking biotin. It took awhile to notice anything but it is definitely helping. Hope today is kind to you 🤗

Methotrexate, a commonly prescribed medication for rheumatoid arthritis (RA), can sometimes lead to hair loss, although this side effect is relatively uncommon. It occurs in about 1% to 3% of people taking the drug. Methotrexate is an immunosuppressant and works by blocking cells' access to folate, targeting fast-growing cells, including those that cause inflammation in RA. However, this action can also affect hair follicles, leading to hair loss. If you're experiencing hair loss while on methotrexate, it's important to discuss this with your rheumatologist. They might adjust your dosage or explore alternative medications. Additionally, taking folic acid supplements may help reduce some of methotrexate's side effects, though it hasn't been found to promote hair growth specifically.
