It is called VCD - vocal cord dysfunction and there are many causes for it, your best bet is to see you family doctor.

Acid Reflux or GERD can cause the body to produce mucous in the throat to protect the vocal cords from the acid. If you have a lot of mucous in your throat it causes hoarseness. I suffer from reflux and have this problem.

My Dr explained to me that we have a hyoid bone (?spelling) in our larynx and just like our other joints/bones, it is affected by inflammation. My voice fluctuates from slight raspiness to full-on voicelessness; it lasts sometimes days/weeks depending on the state I'm in. It's exhausting trying to talk when you have no voice at all, and it's frustrating when people look at you sideways because all of a sudden you've put on a deep, husky, sexy voice :)
