Yes its a hassle going off your meds before surgery. I have had a lot of experience with it. Before a major surgery, Dr.'s gave me a one time dose of IV prednisone to stop any after flares from starting. It was very effective and I never had a problem with it. I wish you all the best with your surgery -they won't even touch my back, very badly destroyed with three forms of arthritis as well as RA.

I'm having back surgery in April, the neurosurgeon wants me to stop Rinvoq 6 weeks before and after surgery! That's a long time without this medication that has been about 60% effective re symptoms. I'm seeing my rheumatologist in Feb to discuss the need to stop for that period of time. It seems such a long time to stop and the real potential for a flare up making it difficult to recover.

Yes, the stress of surgery can be a trigger for a rheumatoid arthritis (RA) flare-up. Stress in general is known to exacerbate RA symptoms, and the stress associated with surgery, including the worry about the procedure and recovery, could potentially trigger a flare-up. Additionally, some patients have reported that stopping their RA medications before surgery has caused flare-ups, which could be related to both the cessation of medication and the stress of the surgery itself.

Here is a question that you might be interested in and I can help you with: What are some common triggers for RA flare-ups?

I'm not sure if I will go forward with surgery yet. I've had the injections which didn't work but taking prednisone has helped. Not an easy decision to make, but not having surgery on the back may not be the best decision either. Today, back surgery by a reputable and competent surgeon can be a better decision.

L4 & L5 are unstable and moving so much it caused a big cyst on the spine. I don't really have a choice.
