How Often Do You See Your Rheumatologist For Your RA?

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭
Rocklin, CA

I was diagnosed 2 years ago and had my initial consultation and treatment plan. Other than having my labs every 3 months and the Dr. Messaging me my labs looks good or an occasional message I have sent regarding something for nausea or possible adjustment in dosage of methotrexate I haven’t had an in person appointment since my initial appointment. Don’t get me wrong my DR. Is responsive I just haven’t not been physically seen for 2 years.

According to the knowledge base, the frequency of visits to a rheumatologist for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) can vary:

- Yearly Visits: If you have well-controlled RA, no medication side effects, and all monitoring and labs look good, a once-a-year in-person exam is reasonable and important
- Regular Monitoring: Regular Show Full Answer

Always consult with your rheumatologist to determine the best schedule for your specific condition.

I agree. Is there any chance you can ask for appointments? Take your questions with you? Just a thought. If dr isn’t checking your joints at appointments, I would consider changing to someone who does. (If that is possible.) Well, just my thoughts. Prayers for good days!

Thank you Pamela. I’m definitely doing the labs every 3 months but to your point I was thinking my doctor would want to physically look at me more than once a year. 🤷‍♀️

My Rheumatologist has me do labs and come in every 3 months. He and my primary are keeping a close eye on my liver function. The great thing is that while my last RA markers were good, my fingers have begun to deform. That started the discussion of changing meds. Dr. L told me this is why he likes to see patients as well as labs. Sometimes our bodies tell a different story. He always checks my hands, shoulders, knees and feet.
