Has Anyone Developed Fibromyalgia After Developing RA?

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭

I have had RA a year this past June. This past May, I had 2 surgeries back to back . The surgeon said the surgeries were successful. I continue with terrible pain 15 weeks post op. Now, I am going back to Mayo to be tested for fibromyalgia. What have others experienced?

I was diagnosed with RA over 10 years ago and then I had the diagnosis of fibromyalgia approx 2-3 years later. It’s tough! Both have a very different feel to them, the RA causes pain in the joints whereas fibromyalgia causes pain in the soft tissues. My husband massages my legs for me and tells me he can feel ‘knots’ in the areas I can feel the most pain, massaging is painful but helps in the long run. Most times I keep fairly up beat but about every 8 weeks or so I get a time where it just wears me down and causes me to cry and ask myself the question’Why me!’ I’m not that sort of person and just get on with life as best I can but sometimes the pain is overwhelming. I take Naproxen as an anti inflammatory which does help, co-dydramol for pain which just takes the edge off sometimes, and Amitriptyline x3 at night as a muscle relaxant. My best friend is the hot water bottle as warmth relieves the pain and helps me
relax. Reading on here that people take Melatonin and magnesium I will give it a go. Sending all good wishes and gentle hugs to my fellow sufferers. May god give us strength to cope with the pain and discomfort we are dealing with. 🤗💜

I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia before I was diagnosed with RA. I never dreamed it was RA that was swelling my knuckles and other joints. No one in my family has either. So I was a bit shocked. It has been challenging to juggle the two and differentiate between the two. With God.s help and new meds being introduced I am dealing with it. Hope you’re having a better day !

Yes I have both..... Diet is the best way to keep from having flares. I also have osteoarthritis. Nights and morning are the toughest for me...... I just go slow.
Rest when you need to.......

Yes I was diagnosed with RA in 2018 after testing two times.... I did not believe it. I was then diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and now I have osteoarthritis which is really painful........ I watch my diet but it seems flare are more common now then before. The weather here plays a big part..... I am either freezing or hot. Some of the the medication the rheumatologist prescribes does more harm then good.
I hope you are doing well today(( 🤗)) hugs.
