The most effective thing I have found is exercise. It is the last thing I want to do. My instinct is to sit or lie down with the heating pad. But I have learned over the thirty some years is I do better with more exercise and consistent exercise through out the day. I do upper body exercises with light hand weights and I ride an exercise bicycle twice a day. First thing in the morning when I really just want to go back to bed, and again in the early evening. The exercise does as much for my mood as it does for my body.

I do weight training twice a week on machines. The other benefit of the exercise is that I can stay mobile enough to garden and live more independently

I also garden and am an avid bird watcher. I also currently have a pair of albino squirrels living here in one of my Maple trees. Nature is very uplifting and calming for me.

Adding mindfulness meditation has also helps reduce stress and pain

If it’s a work day, I dress warm and suck it up. Soon as I get home, hot baths and tea, warm pjs and my favorite heating pad.
