Does Anyone Have Keratoconus And RA?

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭
Philadelphia Area, PA

I have keratoconus I have struggled with this now over ten years and the last three years have been a struggle with dry eyes and I believe it has something to do with RA and SS. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. I wear scleral lenses.

Yes, individuals with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) can also develop keratoconus. Additionally, there is a specific condition called Peripheral Ulcerative Keratitis (PUK) that can be associated with RA. PUK is a serious eye condition that can occur in people with autoimmune diseases like RA.

@A myRAteam Member with sclerals your cornea is bathing in solution all day. So it does feel good. But after long wear they can feel dry. Everyone is different. If you decide to try let me know how it goes for you.

@A myRAteam Member. Yes my sclerals help with dry eye. But I still have symptoms but I feel it will be be worse if I didn’t. Sclerals can be tricky at first but once fitted correctly it’s a blessing. It doesn’t hurt to try buttt they can be expensive. Mine are medically necessary so my insurance pays for them.
