Diagnosing foot pain as arthritis involves several steps:

- Noting any family history of arthritis or other autoimmune diseases.

2. Physical Examination:
- A thorough examination of the feet to check for swelling, redness, and tenderness in the joints.
- Assessing the range of motion and any deformities.

3. Imaging Tests:
- X-rays to look for joint damage or changes typical of arthritis.
- MRI or ultrasound may be used for a more detailed view of the joints and soft tissues.

4. Laboratory Tests:
- Blood tests to check for markers of inflammation and specific antibodies that may indicate rheumatoid arthritis or other types of arthritis.

5. Symptom Patterns:
- Observing if the pain affects both feet and the same joints in each foot, which is common in rheumatoid arthritis.
- Noting if the pain is localized to specific joints, such as the big toe, which is typical in osteoarthritis.

My RA started in my feet. I periodically get injections to help ease the pain.

For me, considerable osteoarthritis showed up on X-rays. Evidence of bone on bone, bone spurs, hammer toes, even previous fractures. My Ortho guy gave me a Budin toe splint. It helps. And sometime this winter I will Ave a fusion on my big toe.
No more high heels. Like I care, lol!
