Due to elevated liver enzymes I cannot take methotrexate so am on plaquenil also with 10 mg of prednisone daily. Just started backing off prednisone so we will see. Tried adding arava but too hard on liver. Still experience a lot of pain in shoulders and hands, especially in the AM. Next step would be a biologic if pain gets out of control again. Many people take multiple meds for RA.

Plaquenil works a little for me with swelling but not pain. Alsi my eye dr says every 6 months to check your eyes. Methotrexate gave me chest pains. Had my 1st remicade infusion yesterday and feeling ok today. Will need a couple infusions to really see a difference. Good luck.

Plaquenil worked really well for me for many years. Very safe drug- BUT you must have your eyes checked every year for possible retina damage.

I've been on Plaquenil for 2 years and it works for me...I take prednisone if I get a flareups. My doctor is happy with what I'm on and don't see any changes for me in the near future. Only thing I don't like is that I have to see the eye doctor every 6 months to make sure the Plaquenil isn't messing with my eyes. So far there has been no problem. My daughter-in-law also takes Plaquenil...and has been on it for years and she also has not had any problems.
