Swollen Feet And Toes

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭

My feet are swelling and they look like a bearclaw fried pastry from the fair! I am staying off of them as much as possible and elevate throughout the day. I take predisone, and Tylenol. I have to walk! Won't let hubby pick me up for any reason. So my question is, who else is having diffuculty with their feet and what reliefs have you discovered and what works best?

Members rallied around someone experiencing severe foot and ankle swelling while taking prednisone, sharing personal experiences with daily swelling from rheumatoid arthritis, neuropathy, and humidity. Several members recommended practical strategies that have helped them, including compression or copper-infused socks, diuretics like Lasix, Epsom salt soaks, frequent movement to prevent blood clots, reducing salt intake, staying hydrated, and using ice packs or tennis balls for relief. A recurring theme was the importance of consulting a doctor to rule out blood clots or other underlying issues, with many members emphasizing that while elevating feet and managing medications helps, persistent severe swelling warrants medical attention.

Compression stockings help a lot! This can be a sign of other problems, so mention it to your doc

I agree with all of the above…I will try one and go to the next modality if it doesn’t work. What I know is: if I sit, I swell. If I stand too long, I swell (gel phenomenon). I get so stiff I can’t bend anything. I will do the alphabet with my ankles, gently. Or ride my stationary recumbent bike gently. I need to get the fluid moving around. If none of that working, elevate my legs higher than my heart. Then I try lifts and bends to wiggle them to bendable.

Mostly, I try not to get upset about it!
