What’s The Deal With RA (I’m New To This Illness)?

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭

What’s the deal with RA (I’m new to this illness)? I have a relatively new doc that put me on Plaquenil and is satisfied to just leave me like that. I have swelling and pain all day long. Is this life now? The doctor made is sound like the Plaquenil was just to get rid of the swelling (which it doesn’t do that either), so what is to get rid of the pain?

Do I need a new doc?

Ann you are correct, we are all unique. While some medications work for others, they may not work for you. There are several articles on this website about the medications used for RA.

I was on Plaquenil myself. It did not work for me. Others on these forums, Plaquenil works great for them. It's a matter of your doctor finding the right medications for you.

A good place for information is the NIH (National Institutes of Health), PubMed. Search for articles on Medications for RA. I find the NIH articles are more understandable than PubMed.

Take care,

Maggie

The first line medication for RA is a Biologic like Plaquenil or Methotrexate. It depends on how long you have been taking the Plaquenil? Maybe your RA is more serious I do not know unless I can examine. With X-rays my rheumatologist said mine was severe and put me on Methotrexate and another JAK med for RA
