Already On MTX, Now Started On Hydroxychloroquine And Having Rotten Time

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭

Just a week into the added Hydroxychloroquine and I had thought I was improving till I started this. Now every joint aches in the morning and I am struggling with intense fatigue. Does this mean the drug is not for me or should I give it time to settle? Anyone else found this added to their pain initially?

Members responded to someone experiencing new joint pain and fatigue after starting Hydroxychloroquine alongside methotrexate, with the most common advice being that RA medications typically take several months to show improvement and that the worsening symptoms are more likely the disease itself rather than a reaction to the new drug. Several members shared mixed experiences with Hydroxychloroquine, including one who found life-changing relief within a month after losing range of motion, while others had to discontinue it due to eye problems, severe skin reactions, or lack of effectiveness, ultimately switching to alternatives like Rinvoq. A recurring theme was the importance of patience, allowing 4 to 6 months for medications to work, staying in close communication with your doctor about any concerning symptoms, and remembering that not every medication works for everyone.

Most RA drugs take quite a while to work. Unlikely it's the Plaquenil causing new pain, more likely it's the disease not yet under control. But check with your doc if you're worried. FYI_ Plaquenil has helped me for many years.

Speak to your Dr and if ok I always state this and follow this . I allow every med a few months to work . I have done 4 to 6 months time frames. If there is a severe reaction that's different and then follow up with your doctor
