Methotrexate

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭
Central FL

I read an article on methotrexate that talks about taking it daily along with folic acid. My dr has me on 6 pills once a week, daily folic acid pill. Is anyone on methotrexate taking it daily as opposedto1 x week ?

Methotrexate was my start. It was horrible. From the onset this drug caused vomiting and diarrhea that ultimately led to severe malnutrition and almost to my death. Fortunately my insurance covers much needed biologics. Extremely costly and only partially effective. Over the years my doctor tried methotrexate, sulfasalozine, lueflodsmide and hydroxychloquine. All carry very bad side effects but no remission for me.

I think the methotrexate knocks out the folate in your body, so they have to supplement it with folic acid. It is to add that, but also is supposed to help against the side effects.

I was told by my current rhuematologist that methotrexate is typically the only med that insurance company will cover so many people.have no choice but try it. Original doc said that it takes time for the med to.work in the body so I suffered with the side effects for several months. I have read on this site that it works good for some people so I have only my experience to share

I take 6 Methotrexate once a week only and Folic Acid every day except the day I take Methotrexate. Folic Acid is a must while taking Methotrexate. Also Hydroxychloroquine every day. Aside for a few mild flare ups, it works for me. Sending you positive thoughts. 🌹
