How Long Does It Take For Cortisone Injections To Work?

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭
Gray, GA

I had cortisone injections in both elbows a week ago; painless for two days. My doctor said there were no restrictions; I could resume normal activities
Now pain is worse. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

You should feel relief within a day or so. Mine typically lasts for about 6-8 weeks depending on the area

I seem to have longer-lasting relief from my cortisone shots than most. I have had them in my back for degenerative disc disease, spondylosis, and spinal stenosis and it takes a few days to get the relief that is minimal at best. I can get them in my thumb and relief is almost immediate. Also, I get them in my right shoulder for excruciating pain. It starts to work in a day or so and lasts for 3 or more months. My shoulder and the right thumb are where I realize that I am lucky when reading some of your responses. I also take Orencia. That took about 3 months to notice any results. But I think it helps my shoulder a lot.

You need to alternate heat and ice to help with pain at the injection site. Some people will experience a roid flare, but it should ease with the ice and heat alternations. Also, tylenol or ibuprofen helps too.
