What Is Range Of RF Factor And What Is An Elevated Reading

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭

Hello,

I had a blood test recently and was advised by my Doctor that I had a RF of 19 IU/ml which she advised is above the ‘normal’ range of 14 IU/ml.

I have read that the ‘normal’ range can be up to 20 IU/ml. I am somewhat confused as to whether I have RA as was my Doctor as apart from a sore knee I do not appear to have any symptoms so apologies for using this forum to ask this question.

Is my reading sit within the ‘normal’ range and to provide some context what does the IU/ml scale run… read more

2 months ago my RA factor was at 900.0 which is as high as the test would go. I was on cimza and it was working great for me but got an infection between my toes and had to have my middle toe amputated. Doc said that the cimza wouldn't cause the infection. Probably just Diabetes. He said the cimza would take about 3 months to start working but I noticed a big change I'm less than 2 weeks.

My factor for that test was 116. But I don’t think blood tests tell the whole story. Speak more with your doctor, and if he is not an RA doctor, be referred to one.

I would suggest talking with your doctor about your concerns over the testing ranges. Only your doctor will know the specifics of your particular test and can give you an accurate answer based on your situation.

To confuse you further...I don't have an elevated RF, infact it doesn't show in my bloods at all! I am sero negative! I thought, when first diagnosed, there was only rheumatoid and osteoarthritis. I now know there are variations on a theme!!
I wish you well on your journey and hope its just a knee injury!

The range of the Rheumatoid Factor (RF) test can vary depending on the laboratory, but generally, a result above the normal range is considered elevated. The range of the Rheumatoid Factor (RF) test can vary depending on the laboratory, but generally, a result above the normal range is considered elevated. For example, if the normal range starts at 20, a reading of 22 is a very low positive and might not have much clinical significance. However, a reading of 600 would be considered significantly elevated and might have more clinical weight.

- Normal Range Example: Starts at 20
- Low Positive: 22
- Significantly Elevated: 600

An elevated RF level can indicate rheumatoid arthritis or other conditions, but it is not solely diagnostic.
