Members confirmed that muscle loss and weakness are common experiences with rheumatoid arthritis, particularly affecting the hands, fingers, legs, and arms in ways that disrupt daily tasks, cause falls, and limit the ability to work or exercise. Several members shared strategies that have helped them maintain some function, including gentle stretching, swimming in warm pools, walking regularly, limiting physically demanding activities to two-hour windows, and working closely with doctors to find effective medications like Humira, Simponi, or Tramadol. A recurring theme was the emotional resilience required to keep moving despite pain and frustration, with members refusing to give up even when their bodies gave out.

Yup, I cannot workout with weights, gardening bothers me, it is a horrible disease. Are you on any RA medication ? The methotrexate stopped helping me past 7 months so now I'm on prednisone and will be starting Humira next week. Not to happy about any of this.

Yes, muscle loss and weakness are common issues for people with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). This condition, known as rheumatoid sarcopenia or rheumatoid cachexia, occurs due to chronic inflammation, which leads to metabolic hyperactivity and muscle wasting. Studies have shown that nearly half of RA patients experience decreased muscle mass, which is associated with higher disease activity and more functional limitations.

Hi and yes I have lost muscle mass due to being unable to function for long periods of time. Now I am experiencing so much pain and inflammations with my hands, wrist and fingers. Also my knees, shoulders and feet. However, when I get a break I walk along with my baby Yorkie for about an hour as I just don't want to give up. This RA, Osteoarthritist along with the liver and other GI issues wreak so much havoc on my body but I just refuse to give up. I do give out but I refuse to give up!

I have such severe weakness I questioned whether I had MS. My doc told me very common in RA. Muscle pain is very bad the day after I try to do work like cleaning, farm work, etc. I have to limit labor to 2 hours or will pay dearly the next day. I find stretching and swimming in a very warm pool helpful, but when I get out of the pool I feel like my body weighs a thousand pounds and weakness is worse for a while. This is a real struggle. I did much better while on Tramadol for 17 years but new doc stopped prescribing due to opioid crisis. I never abused it and it was not addicting. Since it was stopped, my productivity at home has dropped severely. Am about to go to pain clinic to get it reinstated.
