Can RA Affect Your Teeth ?

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭

I have good teeth no cavity. But when I was younger 9 my mother could not afford to save my molar so she had it pulled. Been keeping up with them cleaning, brushing , flossing. But went to dentist the other day and my teeth have shifted meaning a need to get wisdom teeth pulled and a molar pulled because roots are exposed?

Teeth problems go with RA. About 5 years after getting diagnosed with RA, 3 of my front teeth just fell out. My dentist told me he should have spotted I had RA years before I was diagnosed. The teeth are the first sign of RA. I eventually lost all my top teeth and clinging onto the bottoms but I know it's only a matter of time.

I asked my dental hygienist recently, after reading an article that an enzyme was discovered that causes dental issues in people with RA. The enzyme is in everyone's mouth much higher in those with RA.She wasn't aware of that specific article but said RA effects all parts of the body so it would make sense. I have had a lot of dental problems the past 15 years (broken teeth, crowns replaced, etc.), so after 3 previous dental implants I am currently getting an implant bridge to replace 3 missing teeth & do not have dental insurance!!! Being retired I though we'd spend our free time traveling but my vacations are to the Dentist these days! I realize how important dental health is for my overall well being, so I had to make choices. I went to the dental clinic at our local University school of dentistry for the first 2 implants, they were a little less expensive there. Maybe anyone needing financial help can check out some alternatives. Good luck!

I don’t have the money to pull the tooth or do a deep cleaning right now my insurance from my job I just got won’t start till January and even then out of pocket will still cost me 500. For one tooth to be pulled , 4 quads to be cleaned and fill in on a molar that is reseeding. That does not included wisdom teeth after that I have to see him every 3 months for cleaning. Everything is in back of molars he mention periodontal but the pockets were not deep. He what’s to stop it. And told me the cleanings will do that. I have Sica syndrome. That’s what my RA doc said along with fibromyalgia. Nothing had been working so I took my self off everything. So I’m starting from scratch. Started taking Enbrel in May I can’t tell the different because I’ve been so stressed. At first I thought maybe it was working I walked away from my 224 pound stress and was feeling much better but then a broke my foot it was not healing it took all summer my new job started in October but I really don’t know how long I can do it I had a horrible accident in 2017 and from that doctor said I would never fully recover not with the quality of life I had being active all the time. I’m on no pain meds at all nothing just my injections. At night is the worst when I come home and I lay down it’s like everything lights up in my body. I’m trying to keep my faith. But it’s hard
