Long Trips Overseas
Hello all. We have a new member who has a lot of concern regarding a trip to Africa next month. I have not ventured out of my state in a while but I know there are others of us out here who have gone places and faced obstacles while preparing to travel and traveling. Her name is @A myRAteam Member and she needs some answers to questions on traveling. Times like this is when I miss @Atypicaldandelion as she was a traveler. I know someone just returned from a trip to Africa. If anyone can… read more
I have traveled from Australia to UK and back again several times. 22 hours flight over 2 legs.
The first time I did it, both ankles swelled up like balloons, I was quite worried.
Things that I have since learned have helped me to avoid it happening again.
1. I wear compression socks
2. Request an aisle seat so that you can stand up and walk around frequently without disturbing other people.
3. Drink water, water and more water to stay hydrated and of course avoid alcohol.
4. Keep your medication in your hand luggage so that it is accessible if needed.
5. While sitting in your seat, kick your shoes off and keep wiggling your toes and make circular motions with your feet/ankles.
6. Raise your arms above your head and wriggle your fingers.
6. Take a neck pillow to help support your head when you sleep. I also take a “hoodie” and pull the hood down over my eyes to help me sleep.
7. A packet of wet wipes are great for freshening up on a long flight.
8. Boiled sweets or mints help to stop your ears popping when coming into land.
If I think of any more tips, I will come back later.

I don't fly much, and I don't go out of the USA. But I have family who have traveled outside of the USA. And I have older friends that travel by airplane.
You definitely need vaccines for traveling to different countries.
When you fly you can get a wheelchair to take you to the gate, pick you up and take you to baggage claim. Also if you have to change planes they will help you with that. I strongly recommend using that service especially if you have to change planes. Airports are so big and it's great having someone who works there get you from gate to gate.
Thats the only help I have to offer. 🤗 Hope she has a wonderful time.

I guess it depends on how much pain you have when
Walking. I have not taken may trips recently due to the
Fatigue. I think the main thing to remember is to take
Care of yourself. If there is an optional excursion and
You are exhausted don't force yourself to go. I have
Done that, traveling is fun and will help take your mind
Off what you can't do.
Cathie, September is a lovely time to visit UK, beautiful autumn colours.
Enjoy
