Has Anyone Experienced Pain In Right Side By The Rib Area?

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭
North East Scotland

I was previously diagnosed with costochondritis, which I was told is inflammation of the cartilage on the ribs, but my inflammatory markers this time are low, all bloods fine, CT scan & ultrasound scan brought up no additional issue like kidney stones or gallstones, so experiencing a lot of pain in right side by my lower ribs but months of investigation and still no decisions by my doctor other than treating me with anti biotics three times now for suspected UTI/kidney infection just incase.

Members connected over the frustrating experience of chronic rib pain, with many sharing that their rheumatologists attributed it to RA-related inflammation or costochondritis, which often worsens during flares and can feel like sharp stabbing sensations, tightness around the chest, or pressure that makes breathing and movement difficult. Several members found some relief through heating pads, muscle relaxers, anti-inflammatory medications, gentle stretching, and steroid packs, though many emphasized that the pain remains persistent and severely impacts sleep and daily activities. A recurring theme was the emotional toll of feeling dismissed by doctors, the challenge of getting clear answers after extensive testing, and the comfort of knowing they are not alone in this painful and often misunderstood aspect of living with RA.

I get pain in my right rib cage area that's caused by a herniated T11 T12 disc. Muscle relaxer and resting back on a heating pad help. Hope you can get some relief.

It does sound like costochondritis. Use heating pad, anti-inflammatory meds, rest, and gentle stretching to chest wall.

I have had RA since 2009 and it is now so much worse. I have run pain, kidney pain, lower back pain, every joint pain. Standing up from sitting is excruciating, sitting down makes my knees feel like they're about to pop. I remember being told I had costchondritis when I had severe pain in my sternum. It flares up and feels like my chest is about to rip open. Constant pain from one area to the next. I am taking Sulphasalazine but just like all the other meds I've tried, these do not work
