Members shared varied experiences with how long methotrexate takes to provide relief for rheumatoid arthritis, with timelines ranging from six weeks to four months, and a common theme that patience is essential as the medication needs time to build up in the system. Several members offered practical advice for managing side effects, including taking folic acid daily (though not on the same day as methotrexate), eating before taking the pill or having it with milk to reduce stomach upset, switching to injections if oral tablets cause digestive issues, and using iron supplements for mouth sores. A recurring theme was that everyone responds differently to the medication, with some finding significant relief while others needed to adjust their dosage or switch to biologics like Humira, but the community consistently encouraged newcomers to stay patient and communicate openly with their rheumatologist about side effects and concerns.

I take 1 mg folic acid pill, prescription. Also, I sometimes get mouth sores from either the MTX ot the Sjogrens disease. My dentist recommended taking iron tablets, OTC. It took about 3 days and my mouth sores began disappearing.

It seemed to take a looooong time, but my rheumatologist is very conservative and increased it VERY gradually. I mean like 4 months or so!! Hang in there. I got worse before the tide turned and I started to feel better.

It is different on each person, it may take a month.

I mentioned the mouth sores because the MTX can cause them. That way you have an avenue to try to get rid of them.

Hi Sunflowerspa3, It's Pat. I started off taking 6 Methotrexate pills once a week. I now take 8 each week. Initially, I took an anti-inflammatory twice daily in addition to the MTX, and they helped. I am allergic to Meloxicam and the Diclofenac caused stomach troubles. I am now on only Methotrexate and folic acid for this. Still have success...
