So I haven't worked in 15 years, my husband worked at his company for 30 years, and they are closing there doors as of the end of March . I got RA in 1997 & had to quit working in 1999. I wasn't diagnosed until 2011. I contacted a disability lawyer. He said I didn't qualify. I told him I had dozens of emergency room records showing extreme pain & swelling. He said only number work credit are considered and must be within last 10 years. I doubt you can get disability but it doesn't hurt to try.

Talk to an attorney. How long have you worked in your life time? I'm fighting for disability now, have been turned down twice and am going to a hearing now.

To determine if you qualify for disability benefits with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), consider the following criteria:

1. Income: If you are making at least $1,350 a month, you are most likely not eligible for disability benefits. If you are making less, you may still be eligible, but the amount of benefits you receive may be reduced.

2. Ability to Work: You must be unable to perform basic tasks required by most jobs, such as standing, walking, lifting, or remembering.

3. Medical Evidence: You need to provide medical records, test results, and a description of how RA symptoms affect your daily activities and ability to work.

4. Work History: A complete work history from the last 15 years, including any jobs before you became disabled, is required.

5. Other Documentation: You will need your birth certificate, Social Security card, proof of U.S. citizenship, W-2 or other tax forms from the previous year, and proof of any workers’ compensation received.

If you meet these criteria, you can apply for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) online or at a local Social Security office.
