Can't Seem To Get Rid Of This Cough.

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭

I have had a (barking) cough for quite a while. Went to the Dr. and was put on prednisone for 6 days---decreasing the pills by one each day until I took the last one. The cough seemed to get better. Now it's only been 1 1/2 weeks and the cough came back. I'm not sure if I should go back to the dr. or just ride it out. Is this because of the RA that I can't seem go get rid of the cough? If it is, I'm in for a very long winter. Also, my eyes water terribly when I go out in the cold. This… read more

It won’t go away if it’s caused by RA meds. One of mine did that to me as well, I went off of it for other reasons but coincidentally my cough went away. That’s my opinion, I only speak of my experiences. Good luck, I hope you figure it out and get rid of it. You can google your drugs that you’re on and read side effects, I found many have persistent cough listed. 😔

Try to keep your throat lubricated and though it's not easy, try not to cough. The coughing itself irritates your throat causing more coughing. Try herbal teas with honey, not too hot, or gargle with plain water. Some winters I get that cough all winter after I had a cold and in the past the doctor has prescribed me benzonatate to calm my cough response. I have secondary Sjogrens with the RA which causes mouth dryness due to salivary glands not working well. That's why I try to compensate for that. Some people use Biotene. Watery eyes is also a symptom of secondary Sjogren's. Your eyes water because they're dry and they're trying to make tears so use eye lubricant/artificial tears. Systaine is a good brand and there are generic forms of Systaine. I really just treat the symptoms for Sjogren's. I hope this is helpful and your cough goes away. Make sure your lungs are okay.

I somehow combined two different posts, yours and Marna J’s, and thought you were on a bronchodilator. My bad...

Hi @A myRAteam Member. I realize you weren't advising to go off needed meds but rather you thought the meds were causing the cough. I said there could be multiple reasons for the cough including medicines. Usually it's because of dry mouth which can be the reason for the cough, and medicine can cause dry mouth.. I'm not a doctor but I am a CNA and coughing because of dry mouth and irritated throat is very common. Saliva is often reduced with RA so it interferes with swallowing, contributes to decay and causes coughing. @A myRAteam Member didn't mention any lung involvement which I believe the doctor would have checked out, so to me the cough itself would seem to be the problem.. Many people with RA do have dry mouth and the medicines and age and the cough itself irritating can be the cause. Heck I've also had that winter cough after a cold that I can't shake. That's what I was trying to say.. I'm sorry if it came out badly I didn't mean to offend.
