Did It Ever Take Anyone Take Multiple Visits And 6months To A Year For DX?

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭
Phoenix, AZ

Has anyone went in with joint pain and muscle weakness and had ANA and RF come back normal /negative as well as sed rate borderline or not high enough to be at RA level ? I’m wondering if the tests can be negative / not high enough and first and if /when things progress and get worse those levels change ? Wondering if this has people being diagnosed with Fibromyalgia when it’s the start of RA ?

Members shared their frustrations and experiences with getting diagnosed when blood tests came back negative or borderline, with many describing delays ranging from six months to two years before receiving a proper RA diagnosis. Several members emphasized that seronegative RA is real and that doctors should diagnose clinically based on symptoms like joint pain, swelling, nodules, and loss of hand strength rather than relying solely on blood work, with some stressing the importance of seeing a rheumatologist and seeking second or third opinions if needed. A recurring theme was the difficulty of being taken seriously by doctors when test results don't match symptoms, leading to frustration over insurance barriers, misdiagnoses like fibromyalgia, and the emotional toll of waiting months or years for answers while pain worsens.

The Sed rate doesn't mean . I am seronegative, They don't just go by the blood work. Mine doesn't show it's ugly head until I am in the middle of flare. . If you don't get anywhere with your Dr. try your GP, ot another Dr,

Hi Candice, welcome to the site, good friendly people here, all are willing to help and understand what you are feeling. The rate for tests positive and negative are 70/30, mostly RA is diagnosed clinically in your doctors office, then usually there is a referral to a rheumatologist to confirm. No all meds work quickly so have patience, I hope you have the correct combination soon. Vera

Get second opinion. Or third if needed. Fibromyalgia and RA are quite different. I have RA, OR and fibromyalgia. Believe me Fibromyalgia is quite different.

It took about 6 months from the time I started experiencing pain to the time I was diagnosed with RA. I was in a lot of pain during that time.
