I Wonder If Others Have Mouth Problems Connectedto Their RA

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭
Gladys, VA

I wonder if others have mouth problems connectedto their RA. I am aware that the dry mouth is caused by theRA medications that I take. But I have a time with burning of my mouth now too, everything that I eat. Also, brushing my teeth is a chore. I am now having trouble with my teeth aching. And there does not seem to be a reason. Any advice will be appreciated. Thank you!

Members connected over the challenge of managing mouth problems related to rheumatoid arthritis, with many identifying dry mouth, burning sensations, tooth pain, and gum issues as common struggles often linked to medications or overlapping conditions like Sjogren's Syndrome. Several members shared practical solutions that have helped them, including over-the-counter products like Biotene rinse and XyliMelts for dry mouth, prescription options like Salagen to stimulate saliva, and pain relievers like Tylenol or Tramadol for nerve-related tooth pain during flares. A recurring theme was the importance of communicating openly with both rheumatologists and dentists to identify whether medications are contributing to symptoms and to explore alternative treatments or supportive care options.

I take salagen as well as biotene. It also helps my Sjogrens cough.

I have mouth issues with the RA. However, it is part of the diagnosis of Sjogren's Syndrome, which is also an auto-immune disorder. It affects all mucus membrane in the body..eyes, mouth, etc. I use Biotene rinse to control the mouth sores and gum issues. At one point, I was using prescription mouth rinse at $120 for a 2 week supply. I have found the Biotene, as well as generic, to be more effective.

I found a wonderful product for dry mouth yesterday, especially for sleeping. It is called XyliMelts. You can use it at night or in the daytime. It works wonderfully. You can fine it Walmart or CVS. It stimulates your saliva. No prescription needed.

Yes it does help. I can take up to 3 tablets a day but usually only take one to stop my cough when out in public.
