Bone Marrow Biopsy

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭
Durban, ZA

Hi, I have been told that I need to go for a bone marrow biopsy due to a consistently low white blood cell count. Has anyone else ever had such a biopsy? I would like some more information regarding the actual procedure.
Many thanks,
Sandy

I am so sorry to hear this, CocoK. It is so difficult when you have just managed to get one aspect under control and then another raises its ugly head. Thinking of you and your struggle. Never give up hope!

SandyMck so glad to hear your tests are ok and you are seeing improvement. That's great. I know weird blood test results and testing is scary and anxiety provoking.

My docs took me off all meds and my blood counts continue to get worse over the past 16 months. So I am being tested every 4 weeks now as of my recent count showed I am now in severe neutropenia. I am crossing my fingers I don't get an infection, as I have such a compromised immune system. I will most likely go in for another BMB soon...looks like it's some kind of bone marrow disorder or other bone marrow related illness...unfortunately probably due to RA meds. Sometimes RA and its effects feel like a never-ending battle of difficulty...but I keep pushing through trying to live my life and deal with all the consequences.

Hi Jarme and CocoK, my bone marrow biopsy was absolutely fine thanks. My rheumatologist has slowly weaned me off the Salazopyrine as he felt that it was this medication that was affecting my WBC. My WBC and neutrophils have improved dramatically since doing this. I am only taking Nivaquine now for my RA and trusting that all will be fine.

Perhaps the meds that you are taking may be affecting your WBC?

Hi, Sandy, I had a bone marrow biopsy in November and I continue to have low white blood cells and platelets and neutrophils. They are still trying to figure out the cause...if it is RA and inflammation-related or a bone marrow disorder. How did your BMB go?

Hi Sandy! I just read your post about the bone marrow biopsy! I was diagnosed with ra in 2013! I just went in for a blood test on Tuesday and my wbc was low (first time) and all the other bloods were fine! Did you have to see a hematologist? I go next week to have blood checked again!!
