Members connected deeply over the frustrating experience of mysterious skin infections and rashes that accompany rheumatoid arthritis, with many describing intensely itchy red bumps, boil-like sores that ooze and scar, crawling sensations under the skin, and flare-ups that worsen at night or with certain medications like methotrexate, Kevzara, and Plaquenil. Several members shared practical relief strategies, including iodine or polysporin for healing open sores, Aveeno hydrocortisone cream or calamine lotion for itching, moisturizers like virgin coconut oil or Aquaphor to soothe irritated skin, antihistamines like hydroxyzine for welts, paraben-free shampoos for scalp issues, and seeing an allergist or dermatologist for persistent symptoms (with some finding diagnoses like vasculitis, peripheral neuropathy, or annular granuloma). A recurring theme was the emotional toll of feeling dismissed by doctors who don't connect these skin issues to RA, the embarrassment of visible scars and sores, and the difficult trade-off between managing pain with medications and tolerating their uncomfortable side effects.

I have SEVERE RA, no diet will help that. I was told I would probably not reach the remission we are all hoping to achieve, even with the more escalated DMARDs. I do not think just diet is a good way to treat our more severe cases. Your RA number will tell you that when you get your initial blood tests. That being said. The meds suppress parts of our immune system, which in turn lets other persistent, minor, and annoying, issues like rashes ( for me sinusitis constantly) and other things we are able to handle but are a nuisance get us. I know I have to deal with that so I am not curled in a ball with my fingers locked up, neck stiff.......... Side effects suck. They are not my main concern. My advice is. Keep yourself as healthy and active as you are able. Including a diet of your own choosing.

I get rashes and very sensitive skin. Sometimes it feels like there are bugs crawling on my legs and I am very sensitive to mosquito bites. Virgin coconut oil helps with itchiness and rashes.

I’ve just found out I have peripheral neuropathy which is causing heat in my lower legs and arms and the itchy skin, only taken about six years! There is no cure (of course) but I can either take Lyrica (no thanks) or Amyltryptaline (Endep) which I already take as a muscle relaxer to help me sleep. I have upped the Endep to two at night and it does seem to help.
