Aids And Tools That You Use For RA

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭

What tools or aids have helped you the most? I am creating a website to help others adapt to having arthritis. I know what tools have helped me but what is your favorite?! I use my electric jar opener almost daily! My website is www.adaptingwitharthritis.com if you would like to provide feedback. 🤔 it is my first site and a work in progress for sure. Please comment here with your favorite aid!

Members enthusiastically shared their favorite tools and adaptations for living with rheumatoid arthritis in response to someone creating a helpful website on the topic. Several members highlighted practical aids that make daily tasks easier, including electric jar and can openers, reacher grabbers for picking things up, raised toilet seats with handles, perching stools for kitchen tasks, raised garden beds, wrist braces during flares, and creative solutions like using egg cartons to stabilize vegetables while peeling or a spaghetti spoon to reach items in high cabinets. A recurring theme was the importance of pacing oneself, asking for help when needed (especially from grandchildren), and finding small adaptations that preserve independence and allow people to continue doing the activities they love.

Occasionally I have to use wrist braces but only until the pain subsides and the redness goes away. Mostly i try to do things on my own, if I can't I rest a day or two and try again.

I use the stick with the gripper claw to pick things up off the floor. When I am not as tight, I try to bend over for things that I can reach.

Though of another tool. Now no laughing...my spaghetti spoon. It has holes and "fingers" to stir the pasta but I use to reach things in the taller or deeper cabinets.
